Goods in Transit: A Cultural History of Warehousing since the 18th century
(Book Project)
Prof. Dr. Monika Dommann
Completely neglected by social, economic and architectural historians warehouses shape landscapes around ports, railway stations, airports, plants and borders. They are the heart of accelerating material flows in global trade and therefore an instructive space for explorations into the history of modern economies. The history of warehouses shall be pursued by case studies, simultaneously attending to local social milieus, conflicts and material cultures, as well as translocal practices shaped by the economy, technology and politics. Because comparisons among different historical periods and cultures are essential to such a history, the case studies will deal with a variety of architectural and social spaces on different continents, starting with the 18th century.
